Another Connection Made
Since putting up our family website and importing the family tree, we’ve made several connections to relatives. Those relatives are 2nd and 3rd cousins whom I’ve never met. They are from across the United States and across the ocean in Scandinavia. I’m sure these connections would not have been made without the website.
Each connection is a story in itself. Those of us researching family history are finding missing pieces that would not otherwise have been found. It’s very exciting!
The primary technology that is making these connections happen is Internet Search. But the search engine is only half of the formula. The other half is the family website that contains the family information.
Using a WordPress plugin called Roots Persona we are able to import a family tree from other genealogy programs like ansestry.com. We can then manage and display all of those family members records from within our own family website.
Having your own family website gives you total control and ownership of all your data. It also gives you the huge benefit of enabling other people to find you through search engines. With the family website and Roots Persona each family member will be searchable on Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other search engines.
If you want to make connections the easy way this is the way to go! Get a family history website and start making connections!
If you are interested in getting your own family history website set up let us know. We’d love to help you!
Family Generations – How long is a generation?
How long is a generation? Mark discusses this and the relevancy of a single person in relation to the number of ancestors in their family. It’s very interesting to look at these numbers. Going only 10 generations back can include thousands of people in that one family. How long is a generation? About 25 years.
Convert To Digital
Mark talks about the importance of converting your photos, film, and other documents to digital format. Pictures can be scanned. Old movies and film can be converted to digital. And any important document can be scanned and converted to digital format. Converting to digital format will preserve your photos, film and documents forever.
Convert Home Movies to Digital Format
Mark explains and shows an example of a home movie converted to digital format. The movie contains a sound track added to the originally silent film. Many people appear in old home movies that are known to only a few of the older folks in our families. If left unidentified those people, and places and the times, will be left unknown. So there is urgency in identifying the contents and information in those old home movies. This is another piece of preserving your family history. It’s information that will be extremely valuable to your descendants.
How Pixels Work
In this short video Mark explains how pixels work. Pixels are “picture elements” that make up a digital picture.

Your Legacy and Your Family are Too Important to Put Off Till Later

Your Legacy and Your Family are Too Important to Put Off Till Later
I know what it’s like to plan on doing something only to continue putting it off. When I look back there are many things I wish I would have done. Things that I no longer have a chance to do. It’s human nature to put things off. But some things are just too important.Don’t Make the Mistake of Not Asking These Questions!
Do I want my children, grand children, and even younger descendants to know who I was, what I looked like, what my life was like, and even what I sounded like when I talked or sang? Would I like them to hear a speech I gave, or a musical performance I was a part of? Would I want them to hear my stories of the old days? Do I want photos, film, and other treasures that I have saved through the years to be preserved and enjoyed by my descendants?
What is the best way to preserve all of those old photos, film, and documents?
What will happen to all of my family’s old pictures, film, and documents if it stays in the closet?
How can all of this priceless family information be kept safe and be accessible at the same time?
Will all of the wonderful experiences and stories that I have to tell be forgotten when I die?
Will my descendants be able to learn what life was like for me?
Do I want to be remembered?
You can preserve your legacy.
